In 2023, El Niño struck several regions in Indonesia, including parts of Lampung Province. According to the official BMKG website, El Niño-Southern Oscillation (ENSO) refers to anomalies in sea surface temperatures in the Pacific Ocean off the coasts of Ecuador and Peru, which are higher than their usual averages. This phenomenon leads to hotter temperatures in various regions, including Indonesia, resulting in reduced rainfall in areas such as Central Lampung.

The decrease in rainfall has led to a shortage of clean water for the communities around PT Gunung Madu Plantations (GMP). Therefore, on September 27, 2023, GMP promptly responded by providing clean water assistance to the residents of Kampung Terbanggi Ilir and Gunung Batin Udik. Approximately 10,000 liters of clean water are delivered daily to the residents to meet their clean water needs during the dry season.

Representing the company, Iwan Kurniawan, Head of the Services Department, stated that the company provided this assistance in response to the request of the local residents. He expressed the hope that this provision of clean water could alleviate the difficulties faced by the residents, saying, “We pray together for the rainy season to come soon so that the clean water will be available as before.”

The Head of Kampung Terbanggi Ilir, Suhariyanto, contacted on Wednesday, 27 September, 2023, expressed his highest appreciation for the continuous care, attention, and assistance provided by GMP to the surrounding residents, especially those of Kampung Terbanggi Ilir. He mentioned that during the dry season this year, many residents have had difficulty finding water due to wells drying up. Therefore, this assistance with clean water is immensely beneficial to them.
