PT Gunung Madu Plantations (GMP) has received an award as an agroindustry company in the category of the National Sugar Self-Sufficiency Pillar and Downstream Plantation Industry at the Lampung Post Awards 2026. This award serves as recognition of GMP’s consistency in increasing national sugar production while also developing downstream plantation-based industries in Lampung Province.

Representatives of GMP’s management expressed their gratitude for the award and appreciated the organizers for acknowledging the company’s contributions.
“We would like to express our sincere gratitude for this recognition. This award motivates us to continue contributing to national sugar self-sufficiency,” said Iwan Kurniawan, Head of Services Department at GMP, during the Executive Forum held at Hotel Emersia on Tuesday, April 14, 2026.

PT GMP is one of the sugar companies with the largest factory capacity in Indonesia. The company plays a significant role in supporting the national sugar self-sufficiency program and has been a pioneer of modern sugar industry development outside Java since its establishment in 1975. GMP’s main operations are located in Central Lampung, with an integrated production system from cultivation to processing, enabling the company to maintain stable sugar supply.

Based on 2025 production data, GMP recorded approximately 236,000 tons of plantation white sugar (GKP), making it the largest contributor in Lampung Province, accounting for 31% of the province’s total production of 760,000 tons. Nationally, GMP contributes nearly 9% of Indonesia’s total GKP production, which reached 2.6 million tons. This further strengthens GMP’s position as one of the key sugar producers outside Java.

To ensure sustainable production, GMP continues to implement various innovations. The company develops modern agricultural technologies, including mechanization, green technology, and environmentally friendly sugarcane cultivation systems, such as green harvesting without burning. In addition, GMP establishes partnerships with local sugarcane farmers aimed at improving productivity while strengthening the local economy.

“We continue to collaborate with sugarcane farmers around the company to increase production yields. This partnership is key to supporting national sugar self-sufficiency,” he added. This approach not only improves harvest yields but also strengthens relationships between the company and surrounding communities.

GMP’s presence has a significant impact on the regional economy. The company employs thousands of workers, both permanent and seasonal. In addition, GMP actively implements Corporate Social Responsibility (CSR) programs. One of its flagship initiatives is the planting of 60,000 mangrove seedlings to support coastal rehabilitation in East Lampung, particularly in Pasir Sakti Village. This effort reflects the company’s commitment to balancing business growth with environmental sustainability. Despite its strong performance, the national sugar industry continues to face various challenges, including production efficiency and rising production costs each year. However, with over 50 years of experience, GMP remains optimistic in its ability to adapt. The company is committed to improving efficiency and strengthening innovation to support the national sugar self-sufficiency target. The government is also targeting the achievement of sugar self-sufficiency for consumption by 2027. In this context, the role of companies like GMP is becoming increasingly crucial.
